I was lucky enough to spend lots of hours every day at my Great-Grandmother’s house during my early years.
Growing-up I used to listen to her sad stories from Vourla and Smyrne. How well and prosperous their lives used to be and how suddenly they lost everything; how her dad and relatives were murdered by the Turks and how together with her mother managed to escape from the ongoing massacre during the genocide of the Greeks of Asia Minor.
When my mother discovered a small, heavily damaged picture of my Great-Great-Grandmother together with my Great-Grandmother holding my Grandmother after her baptism ceremony, I got really excited with the idea of restoring this rare find and seeing them all together and especially to be able to see my Great-Great-Grandmother Marianthi for the first time. Being able to “go back to that point in time” and discover what she looked like, touched me deeply and gave me the idea to create this website.
