Nyhavn was a thriving commercial harbor in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ships from all over the globe used to dock here.

Nyhavn is a popular tourist destination today, but it has lost its former glory. The ships that once docked here have now been replaced by restaurants and shops. It is also home to many of the city’s most expensive hotels and apartment buildings.

Vibrant and captivating One of Copenhagen’s most iconic places, Nyhavn is a favorite spot to have a refreshing drink on a hot day for locals and tourists.

The name Nyhavn is likely derived from the former church of Nyhavn (Old Norse “Ný hafn”) which once stood here. The earliest written reference to the site by its Danish name is from 1432, referring to a wharf that was possibly on the site of what later became Christiansborg Palace.

It is located in Nyhavn, one of six bays of Copenhagen’s Inner Harbour (Københavns Indre Havnekaj).

The site had been used for shipbuilding since 1585 but Christian IV initiated a project to improve and extend this area with new quays, docks and buildings as part of his modernization efforts that also included building Christianshavn at Christiansborg Palace on Slotsholmen.

The wharf came into use in 1617 and it was lined with small houses and workshops for shipbuilders, caulkers, sailmakers and others.

In 1829, the canal at Nyhavn was filled in. The warehouses along the waterfront were torn down, replaced by residences and the area became a fashionable address for artists and officers moving up in social stature.

The enclave of 1300 inhabitants dating back to its origins as a shipbuilding workshop is today home to over 6200 residents, but its heritage remains unique in Copenhagen’s history.
