Janis Joplin was a singer and songwriter who was born on 19 January 1943.

She is considered to be one of the most influential female vocalists of the 1960s. Janis Joplin was born in Port Arthur, Texas, to Dorothy and her father, Seth. Her parents were originally from Oklahoma. Janis had an older sister, Laura.

Janis’s father died in 1952 after suffering a heart attack on his way home from work. After her father’s death, Janis’s mother remarried to Major Joplin (1914-1969). Major Joplin reportedly abused Janis both emotionally and physically during their marriage.

After high school graduation, Janis enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin in 1961 but dropped out during her second semester when she ran out of money for tuition fees and other expenses like books or food.

She did not finish her degree until 1970 when she attended classes while touring with Big Brother and The Holding Company as the lead singer. Janis Joplin was a pioneer of the counterculture movement and her music reflected her life experiences.

Her musical style was heavily influenced by country, blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, folk music, jazz and classical styles. She was reportedly also influenced by The Rolling Stones’s “Brown Sugar”. Janis Joplin became famous in 1965 with the release of her first album, “Pearl.” This album featured eleven tracks including “Piece of My Heart”.
