It placed all of our endeavors within a vast cosmic framework and suggested the existence of alien beings so strong as to be godlike.

Kubrick and Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey depicted a horrifying vision of a technologically-induced human transformation.

The film is set in 1968 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin have landed on the moon, but something goes wrong with their spacecraft capsule upon its return to Earth, causing both astronauts to die in a freak accident.

The film was made in the late 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, when humanity was on the verge of its first space-age achievement – a manned moon landing. As such, it reflects the anxieties of that time in both its conflicts and its technical predictions.

In particular, it depicts a horrifying vision of the human-species transformation from evolution to something else entirely.
