The Hatter (often referred to as the Mad Hatter) is a fictional character in Lewis Carroll’s 1865 book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its 1871 sequel Through the Looking-Glass.

The Hatter has appeared in almost all of the Alice in Wonderland adaptations to date; although being a minor character, he frequently plays the male protagonist. Norman Whitten, Edward Everett Horton, Sir Robert Helpmann, Martin Short, Peter Cook, Anthony Newley, Ed Wynn, Andrew-Lee Potts, and Johnny Depp have all played the role in movies.
