The Style by Nizako Art on Canvas Interior Decoration 16″×16″

De Stijl, Dutch for “The Style”, also known as Neoplasticism was a Dutch art movement founded in 1917.

The main principle of the movement was that art should express the spiritual in man, rather than his physical appearance. To Mondrian, the spiritual was represented by the straight line, the primary element of which was the right angle. The right angle, he believed, was the most perfect and harmonious of all forms.

Mondrian’s style was highly abstract, and he is perhaps best known for his paintings composed of grids of black lines against a white background. He also made use of primary colors, but only in a limited way. For Mondrian, art was not about pretty pictures or representing the world around us; it was about achieving a higher level of understanding and harmony.

Although Mondrian was the driving force behind Neoplasticism, other artists were also associated with the movement, including Theo van Doesburg, who founded the Dutch group De Stijl and published a journal in order to propagate the group’s theories, the famous painters Vilmos Huszár, Bart van der Leck, and the architects Gerrit Rietveld, Robert van ‘t Hoff, and J. J. P. Oud.
